Canasta is the great melding game of the card-table generation — born in Uruguay, perfected at American kitchen tables, and still the game that turns an afternoon into an event. Browser Controls
- Draw or Take the Pile: Start your turn by drawing from the stock — or, when the rules allow you to use its top card, by taking the discard pile and everything in it. Pile management is where canasta is won.
- Meld: Lay down three or more cards of the same rank with the Meld button, or add to melds your team already has on the table. Seven of a kind makes a canasta — the whole point of the game.
- Discard: End every turn by discarding one card. Choose it like it matters, because it does — your discard is your opponents' opportunity.
- Undo: Second thoughts mid-turn? Undo steps you back so you can arrange the play differently before you commit with a discard.
- Settings: Toggle music, card and score sounds, and visual effects (particles and confetti) any time from Settings.
Special Rules
- The Canasta Deck: Two standard decks shuffled together with four jokers — 108 cards, eleven dealt to each of the four players, the rest becoming the stock and the discard pile. It's a big deck for a big game.
- Melds & Canastas: Melds are three or more cards of one rank, shared with your partner and grown across turns. Reach seven and it becomes a canasta — the milestone every hand is built around, and your ticket to ending the round.
- The Frozen Pile: Discard a wild card and the pile freezes — marked on the table with a ❄ — and stays locked until a player unfreezes it with a natural pair matching the top card. A frozen pile grows fat, and whoever finally takes it usually takes the hand.
- Red 3s & Opening: Red 3s are laid aside automatically as team bonuses the moment they appear — the table tracks each side's count. And your team's first meld must meet the opening minimum, which starts at 50 points and rises as your score climbs.
Melds, Canastas & Wild Cards
- The Natural Canasta: Seven cards of one rank with no wild cards — the purest meld in the game and the more valuable kind of canasta. Slow to build, sweet to finish.
- The Mixed Canasta: Seven of a rank helped along by wild cards. Worth less than a natural, but far easier to complete — most hands run on mixed canastas and honest labor.
- Wild Cards: Jokers and 2s stand in for anything, within limits — a meld can only carry so many. Spent well they finish canastas; spent carelessly they freeze piles and fill hands.
- Red 3s: The bonus cards. Draw one and it goes straight to your team's side of the table, replaced from the stock — free points that ask nothing of you except the luck of the draw.
