How to Play
Pawdoku is a free logic puzzle game that runs in your browser — no download, no sign-up. Every board is a square grid split into colored regions, and your job is to place the puppies: exactly one in every color, one in every row and one in every column, and no two puppies may touch, not even at the corners. Double-click a cell to place a puppy, click to mark the cells that can't hold one with an X, and let the marks narrow the board down until every puppy has its spot. There are 1,500 levels, from tiny 4×4 warm-ups to 10×10 boards, three hearts per level, and a hint that explains the next logical step in plain words whenever you get stuck. The game is in English, and opens in Japanese automatically for Japanese browsers.
Browser Controls
- Place a puppy: Double-click (or double-tap) a cell
- Mark an X: Click an empty cell; click an X again to remove it
- Mark many: Click and drag across cells to put an X on each of them
- Hint: Light-bulb button — shows the next logical step; Apply puts its marks on the board
- Find Puppy: Magnifier button — reveals where one puppy goes
- Settings: Gear button (sound effects, music)
Special Rules
- The Three Rules: One puppy in every color region. One puppy in every row and every column. Puppies can never touch each other — not side by side and not diagonally. An N×N board always holds exactly N puppies, one per row, column and color.
- Hearts: Each level gives you three hearts. Placing a puppy where it can't go costs a heart, while X marks are free and can be changed any time. Lose all three and the Out of Hearts screen lets you revive and keep your board, or restart the level.
- Hints That Explain: The hint button doesn't just point at a cell: it tells you why, in a sentence such as "Only Sky cell left in this row - puppy goes here." or "This row is all Rose - X Rose in other rows.", highlights the cells involved, and Apply fills in the marks for you. It also catches a wrong X you placed earlier.
- Find Puppy: When you'd rather not think it through, Find Puppy places one correct puppy on the board straight away.
- Coins & Boosters: You start with 3 hints and 5 Find Puppy boosters. Clearing a level pays 50 coins plus 10 for every heart you still have; extra hints and Find Puppy boosters cost 50 coins each, and you can also claim one for free every few minutes.
- 1,500 Levels: Levels come in the same fixed order for every player, starting with two 4×4 warm-ups and mixing 6×6 up to 10×10 boards as you go; some levels start with a puppy already in place. After level 1,500 the game keeps going by cycling back through the boards.
- Tutorial: The first time you play, a short guided board walks you through placing a puppy, marking an X and the no-touching rule.
- Progress Saves: Your level, coins and boosters are saved in your browser on this device.
Solving Techniques
- After every puppy: Mark an X on the rest of its row, its column and its color, and on all eight cells around it — none of them can hold another puppy.
- Last cell standing: If a row, a column or a color has only one cell left without an X, the puppy goes there.
- Color trapped in a line: If every free cell of one color sits in the same row (or column), that color's puppy is in that line — so X every other color's cells in that row.
- A line of one color: If all the free cells of a row (or column) belong to one color, that color's puppy is in that line — so X that color everywhere else.
- Groups of lines: When two colors fit only inside the same two rows, those rows are full: X every other cell in them. The same works for three colors in three rows, and for columns.
- Impossible spots: If a puppy on a cell would leave some row, column or color with no room left, that cell gets an X.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Pawdoku?
Pawdoku is a free logic puzzle game you play in the browser. Each square board is divided into colored regions, and you place puppies so that every color, every row and every column has exactly one — and no two puppies touch, not even diagonally. There are 1,500 levels from 4×4 to 10×10. No download or sign-up needed.
How do you play Pawdoku?
Double-click a cell to place a puppy and click a cell to mark it with an X when a puppy can't go there; click and drag to mark several cells at once. Use the rules to rule cells out until each row, column and color has one puppy left. A wrong puppy costs one of your three hearts.
Is Pawdoku like Star Battle or the Queens puzzle?
Yes, it belongs to the same family of logic puzzles: one item per row, column and region, and no two touching. Star Battle puzzles use stars and LinkedIn's Queens uses crowns; Pawdoku uses puppies. It is an original game by Brave Games and is not affiliated with LinkedIn.
Is Pawdoku a sudoku?
Not quite — there are no numbers to write. The name is a playful nod to sudoku because it is the same kind of pen-and-paper logic: every move comes from rules about rows, columns and regions.
How many levels are there?
1,500, played in a fixed order. The first two are small 4×4 boards; after that the boards range from 6×6 to 10×10, mixed so that a big puzzle is often followed by a quicker one. After level 1,500 the game cycles back through the boards so you never run out.
What happens if I make a mistake?
Placing a puppy where it doesn't belong costs a heart; X marks are free and can be removed by clicking them again. With no hearts left you can revive and keep your board, or restart the level.
How do hints work?
A hint explains the next step in words — for example that a color has one cell left, or that a row belongs entirely to one color — highlights the cells, and Apply adds the marks. You start with 3 hints; more cost 50 coins, or can be claimed free every few minutes. Find Puppy (5 to start) simply places one correct puppy.
Is the game in Japanese?
Yes. Pawdoku opens in Japanese automatically when your browser is set to Japanese or when you play from the Japanese page (playgami.gg/ja/game/pawdoku); otherwise it is in English.
Can I play Pawdoku on my phone?
The game was built for touch — double-tap to place, tap to mark, drag to mark several — and its screens adapt to portrait and landscape. We have tested it in desktop browsers so far, so a computer is the recommended way to play for now.
Does my progress save?
Yes. Your level, coins and boosters are saved in your browser's local storage on the device you play on. Clearing site data or switching devices starts a new save.
Does it cost anything?
No. There are no real-money purchases; coins are earned by clearing levels.
